Florida’s Container Ports are Among the Top in the Nation for International Commerce

By Jason McCormick, Analyst

Florida’s geographic location positions the state as an ideal hub for international commerce. The state’s dedication to becoming a leader in global trade has resulted in an impressive infrastructure including 15 deep-water seaports, 20 commercial service airports, 3,000 miles of rail, and a 122,000-mile highway system. In 2017, international trade moving through Florida seaports was valued at $83.2 billion. Of that total, containerized cargo vessels carried $54.4 billion, an 8.4% year-over-year increase.

As of 2018, three of Florida’s deep-water seaports were among an exclusive list of the top container ports by volume in the United States. JAXPORT, Port Everglades and Port Miami combined for a total volume of 3.5 million TEUs in 2018. JAXPORT and Port Everglades were net exporters, while Port Miami was a net importer by 22,733 TEUs. Currently, all three prominent seaports have ambitious capital improvement plans for future growth, which will add to their appeal among the nation’s top distributors and logistics companies.

  • JAXPORT is the top vehicle port in the nation.
  • It is Florida’s only U.S. Strategic Port that is on-call to move military cargo for national defense.

Port Everglades

  • As a top petroleum port in Florida, Port Everglades handles approximately 115 million barrels of petroleum products annually.
  • It’s an eco-friendly port with a recently created 16.5-acre mangrove habitat to improve water quality.

Port Miami

  • Port Miami has global air connections via Miami International Aiport, which is the top ranked international freight airport in the United States.
  • The on-dock intermodal rail connects the port with the national rail system, allowing goods to reach 70% of America witihin four days.
  • Port Miami developed a direct-access tunnel linking the port to the nation’s interstate highway system, which reduced downtown port-generated traffic by 80%.
