2017 in Phoenix, Arizona has already started off on a high-note! At the start of each New Year, Phoenicians have a lot to look forward to in the leading months such as the PlayStation Fiesta Bowl, the PF Chang’s Rock n’ Roll Marathon, the Barrett Jackson and last but not least the famous Waste Management Phoenix Open.
The Waste Management Phoenix Open (WMPO) takes place each year at the TPC Scottsdale in beautiful Scottsdale, Arizona. As the best attended golf tournament in the world, the city welcomes more than half a million fans annually for the “Greatest Show on Grass.” In 2016, the WMPO was played February 1 through February 7 and attended by professional athletes, celebrities and the general public, totaling over 618,000 fans. During this week, those fans fill resorts and hotels, book tee times, scoop up dinner reservations and make purchases at shops, boosting our economy year-over-year.
The WMPO has one of the largest economic impacts of a golf event in the nation. In 2016, the tournament estimated a total economic impact of $227 million and additionally provided jobs to marketers, ticket takers, promoters, construction personnel, transportation services and food services, just to name a few.
In 2017, the Phoenix Thunderbirds – WMPO hosts – plan to once again out do themselves and make it the best year yet. Andy Markham, WMPO Chairman and Cushman & Wakefield Executive Managing Director, says he is cautiously optimistic. To date, they have already sold more tickets than last year and they hope to break all records. With the addition of 10 Skyboxes and 500 general admission seats on the famous 16th hole they are expecting approximately 16,000 people around the rowdiest hole in golf; the most they’ve ever accommodated before. They’ve also upped the ante with this year’s star-studded Coors Light Bird Nest lineup, with having not just one but two big names in music each night. The lineup includes Jake Owen with special guest Chase Rice and Chris Lane on Wednesday, Feb. 1; Tobey Keith with special guest The Band Perry and Ryan Bexley on Thursday, Feb. 2; Kaskade and Flo Ride on Friday, Feb. 3; and Blink-182 and Steve Aoki on Saturday, Feb. 4.
Outside of the WMPO, Scottsdale is home to some of the finest dining and shopping in the west. Luxury outdoor shopping centers including Kierland Commons, Scottsdale Quarter and High Street are all within close proximity to the TPC Scottsdale and feature high-end shopping and cuisine. Among these centers some of Cushman & Wakefield’s favorites include Mastro’s Ocean Club, Postinos, North, Dominick’s Steakhouse, True Food, Eddie V’s, Ocean Prime, Kona Grill, Zinburger, Grimaldi’s, Mellow Mushroom and La Bocca, to name a few.
