WIN Orlando Celebrates Women’s History Month with Clothing Drive for Covenant House

By Karen Kurta, WIN Orlando chapter lead

March is Women’s History Month and the Orlando chapter of Cushman & Wakefield’s Women’s Integrated Network (WIN) was in search of a way to help women in our local community. That help took the form of our annual clothing drive March 6-15, which was designed to coincide with International Women’s Day.

Led by WIN and co-sponsored by the new UNITY (LGBTQ+ Integrated Network) chapter in Florida, this year’s clothing drive collected donations for Covenant House Florida, a local charity serving runaway, homeless, and at-risk youth under 21, including teen parents and their babies. To kick off the 10-day drive, we invited Anne Lee, Director of Development for Covenant House Orlando to come in and speak about their services and needs.

We heard about the variety of services Covenant House provides, including street outreach, temporary shelter, meal assistance, counseling, health services, GED preparation, job readiness training, and transitional housing.

Anne’s passion for helping youth was contagious, and we learned there was a great need for clothing and shoes—especially business clothing for the youth in the job readiness programs. We knew we could help.

Day by day the donations grew, as members of our Orlando team were eager to spring clean for a good cause. On March 18, in lieu of our regular monthly meeting, members of WIN came together from offices all over Orlando to drop off our contributions. We delivered over four car loads of clothes, shoes, household goods, and even a few cash donations. WIN members were treated to a tour of the Covenant House facility, where we could see the facility and resources firsthand.

“You could see that the love and care for the staff members for the youth in this community is really genuine,” said Ev Rosales, WIN member and attendee at the dropoff event. “Everything was well kept and I am glad I was given the opportunity to be a part of the tour. I will continue to donate to them going forward.”

“Our visit to the Covenant House was a rewarding and moving experience,” said Shelly-Ann Gibson, WIN member and event attendee.

“Receiving a tour of the facilities and meeting the people who work with these youth created a lasting impression; we are truly helping and uplifting our community right here in Orlando.”
