Sid Osborn, Senior Director at Cushman & Wakefield, is celebrating 40 years with the firm. He has been consistently ranked among the top producers in the Inland Empire branch, selling and leasing more than 15 million square feet of space and selling in excess of 3,500 acres of land over the course of his career.
I started working at Cushman & Wakefield on November 6, 1978, which was my 28th birthday. That’s how I know it’s been 40 years!
I was privileged to cut my teeth as an intern with the broker who assembled the 1,650 acres of land known as The California Commerce Center, which is contiguous to the Ontario International Airport, for developers Koll Company, Lusk Company, Cadillac Fairview, and Shaw Development. Today it is 95% built out with Class A and B industrial buildings.
Throughout my career I have focused on industrial sales/leasing and land sales in the Inland Empire. In one of my most memorable deals, I sold flashlight manufacturer Mag Instrument, Inc. 32 acres for their current North American headquarters, a 600,000-sf facility in Ontario, CA. I still enjoy representing the family and company in various transactions today.
There have been many changes at the firm since I first joined. In the early 1980’s, I believe there were 1,300 employees across the U.S. Today there are 29,000 in the U.S. and 48,000 globally. I have been a beneficiary of the various Cushman & Wakefield ownerships, such as Rockefeller, Mitsubishi, IFIL/Agnelli, TPG/DTZ, and now we are a publicly traded company. Most of the brokers that I “grew up” with transitioned into real estate development, with many becoming clients. I believe I am the only remaining Cushman & Wakefield broker on the original Inland Empire West team.
However, one constant has been the abundance of resources available, which I have always appreciated, as well as the “hands off” day-to-day broker control, letting us be free to set one’s own sail.
Over the years, I have established meaningful relationships with fellow brokers, support staff, developers, investor clients, owners and employees of companies I’ve represented, competitors, city personnel, and many others. It has been a blessed ride!
