What’s the best career advice you have ever been given?
“You don’t get what you don’t ask for”.
Early in my career I thought if I focussed, worked hard and delivered I would be noticed and get the credit I deserved and the opportunities I desired. This is behaviour more common in women and sometimes referred to as “tiara syndrome”. What I would urge all women to do is simply be less passive/nervous/polite (delete as appropriate) and just get asking more!
Ask for that high profile instruction/client. Ask for that payrise. Ask for that promotion and don’t forget that the guy sitting next to you most certainly has already asked. The worst thing that can happen is someone can say no which will then help inform your next decision. You will also cement your reputation as an effective negotiator!
