Seldom a day goes by without a news headline declaring ‘the end of work’, or ‘rise of the robots’. Timelines frequently differ, as do predictions regarding the amount and type of employment that will be affected, but the assumption is almost always the same – the robots are coming, and they are here to take our jobs.
Amidst this cacophony of alarmist statistics, terminator themed imagery and jargon-filled press releases, it’s hardly surprising that just 17 per cent of senior business leaders confess to being familiar with Artificial Intelligence (AI) – and that’s discounting the likely 5 per cent that simply blagged the answer.
There exists, however, somewhere among the bluster and the blagging, a wealth of experts out there. Fortunately, our next I-Suite event sees the pick of the bunch get together in one place to answer questions about how AI may impact your life.
AI means business
There’s a reason you’ve been hearing so much about AI recently – and it’s not least because there is big money it. PwC estimate that AI could increase global GDP by fourteen per cent by 2030, but realising these gains will not be straightforward. It’s the role of Rob McCargow, AI Programme Lead to advise on how to make this happen, not at any cost, but with the values of human leadership and responsible use of the technology embedded in business strategies.
Me, myself and AI
The assertion that robots are here to take our jobs can be misleading on more than one count. The term robot leads to assumptions about android co-workers, when for most people, AI in the workplace will be more about software than sharing desk space with C-3PO. Nor will our jobs necessarily be taken. It’s more likely that roles will shift, that human intelligence and creativity will complement AI-led processes. Fintech founder Tom Nash’s company, MarketsFlow, aims to do just that, adding AI to human advisory to improve investment management.
The personal and the political
Using AI technology to improve your productivity and efficiency in the work place may sound like a win-win situation, but it’s hard to imagine how we will feel if algorithms start outperforming us in other aspects our lives. Nor is it easy to determine who should be blamed when algorithmic decision making goes wrong, or to understand why who develops AI matters to us all. Dr Kate Devlin, an academic expert in Human Computer Interaction and AI, looks at just some of these questions and more, with a focus on how we as people react with technology.
So, while our current senior business leaders may not be overly familiar with AI and implications, there’s little reason why our future leaders shouldn’t be. After all, given it’s us who will be left in the office once our senior leaders have retired and our line managers have been replaced with a chatbot, we really ought to get to grips with the basics.
