Professional Real Estate Program (PREP) Takes Off in Chicago

By: Vicki Noonan, Chicago Managing Principal

Professional Real Estate Program (PREP) is a 12-month rotational development program for aspiring corporate real estate professionals designed specifically for recent graduates. The PREP program allows associates to gain a vast understanding of the CRE industry through developmental and client-facing projects, industry workshops, and social networking events. Each associate obtains their Illinois Real Estate license and rotates within all divisions of Cushman & Wakefield.

Why Are You Interested in CRE, specifically C&W?

Real estate is the perfect intersection of relationships, analytics, and community building. Growing up in the suburbs of Detroit, I have witnessed the power that real estate professionals have to dramatically change communities for the better. For those reasons, I found a passion for the industry as a student. I chose to join Cushman & Wakefield for its position as an industry leader and innovator.

Getting Started at C&W

I look forward to working through various service lines at the firm to understand all that C&W has to offer. Most importantly, I look forward to eventually identifying where I can add the most value within the Cushman & Wakefield team. I previously worked as a Leasing Agent for a student housing development while in college and interned this past summer at Transwestern working alongside various service lines.

Outside of C&W

My favorite aspect about Chicago is the water. On the weekends you can find me along the lakefront or strolling on the Riverwalk. My favorite travel destination is Greece.

Why Are You Interested in CRE, specifically C&W?

After interning with Cushman & Wakefield in Global Occupier Services, I knew I wanted to be part of the C&W culture after graduation. Everyone was welcoming and willing to help me learn. I also enjoy the constant change and challenges that arise each day in CRE. Growing up outside of Chicago, I’ve always been intrigued by the way a city is built and how people choose where to work.

Getting Started at C&W

I look forward to continuing to meet new people in the company and explore the different service lines.  Originally, one of the benefits that attracted me to the PREP Program is the ability to explore all facets of the industry. Over the next year, I hope to continue to learn the industry and focus on where my skillset best fits at Cushman & Wakefield.

Outside of C&W

Born and raised in Glen Ellyn, a western suburb of Chicago, I’ve always dreamed of living and working in the city. My favorite thing to do is going for walks through different neighborhoods and finding unique coffee houses and restaurants to try! My dream vacation would be to take two years off and go everywhere, but while that’s not quite possible I would settle for backpacking through Southeast Asia.

Why Are You Interested in CRE, specifically C&W?

I was not sure what I wanted to major in. I knew I wanted to be in business, but other than that I had no clue what I wanted to do. I liked the creative aspect of marketing, the analytical side of finance, and the broad market understanding that economics brought to the table. However, none of these seemed like the perfect fit. I had an older friend suggest I take the introductory real estate course, and well… the rest is history! I knew I wanted to work at a large commercial real estate firm where I could move vertically as well as horizontally. As a PREP Associate at Cushman & Wakefield, I will be able to do both.

Getting Started at C&W

The summer after my sophomore year, I worked at Hovde Properties doing Property Management and assisting with residential leasing. After my junior year, I worked at CBRE working with the Debt & Structured Finance team. Through both internships I learned a lot about residential leasing and underwriting commercial properties. I am looking forward to experiencing multiple aspects of the business, and I hope to gain a better understanding of all the moving pieces that go into a real estate transaction.

Outside of C&W

Chicago is such a great place because it is a big city that feels relatively small. I have been able to explore and get to know so many more people in the few weeks I’ve been living here. The deep-dish pizza is obviously something I am happy to have in my backyard! My favorite destination would be anywhere in Scandinavia. I specifically love Sweden because I have family from there.

Why Are You Interested in CRE, specifically C&W?

I knew I wanted to be in the commercial real estate industry after my internship at Crosspoint Associates, a small development and management firm just outside Boston, Massachusetts. I loved the fast-paced environment, team atmosphere, and dynamic culture. However, I knew I wanted to work for a large, full-service firm right out of college. What really drew me to C&W was the rotational aspect of the PREP Program. I knew I wanted to work in commercial real estate, I just didn’t know what part. It’s a long story how a proud New Englander ended up in the Midwest. The bottom line is I knew I wanted to do this program, and I was willing to relocate if need be.

Getting Started at C&W

I am most excited to dip my feet into a little bit of everything. I came in with an idea where I thought I would fit, but after all the conversations I’ve had over the last two weeks, I now know that I have no idea. I am most excited about possible rotations in leasing, investment sales, and strategic consulting. However, I hope to gain as much exposure to as many service lines and teams as possible to gain a well-rounded understanding not only of Cushman & Wakefield, but also the industry. I believe this will give me a competitive advantage in the future as a unique value-add to a team.

Outside of C&W

I am from Narragansett, Rhode Island, and I had never set foot in Chicago until I accepted the job. So far, I would say my favorite thing about the city is the lake! I recently learned the lakefront is not called the coast.

Why Are You Interested in CRE, specifically C&W?

In the summer of 2017, I had a valuable experience while interning within GOS and brokerage for Cushman & Wakefield in New York. After hearing about the PREP program this summer, it immediately appealed to me on many levels. I knew I wanted to be a part of this company at such an exciting time.

Getting Started at C&W

Being a PREP Associate will be an invaluable experience because I have the unique opportunity to rotate through the various departments within Cushman & Wakefield. After the program, I hope to find my place within the company and work in a service line where I fit best.

Outside of C&W

Moving to Chicago has been great so far, but being from Florida, I am very nervous for winter. If anyone has any recommendations for a warm coat, I’m all ears. I’m hoping to go somewhere warm soon (maybe the C&W Tampa office, which is now my dream vacation spot). For now, I love exploring the different neighborhoods in Chicago and hitting all the best restaurants.
