Eight Great Austin Organizations In Search of Volunteers
It’s the Season of Giving and what better gift to give others than your time? Consider helping out your fellow Central Texans by volunteering at these worthy organizations now and in the New Year:
Saint Louise House
Mission: Empowering women with children to overcome homelessness in Central Texas.
Opportunities: Donate your time and efforts on a weekly, monthly, or special project commitment; from birthday cakes, to storage inventory, data entry, food bank delivery, and everything in between.
Boys and Girls Club – Austin
Mission: Inspire and enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to realize their full potential as productive, responsible and caring citizens.
Opportunities: Adults needed to work directly with youth as homework helpers and tutors, activities assistants, and offering college preparation support. A minimum commitment of 2 hours per week for 12 weeks is required. Groups seeking one-day, project-based volunteer opportunities are also in need. Volunteers must be at least 18 years of age.
St. David’s Healthcare
Mission: With more than 110 sites across Central Texas, St. David’s HealthCare includes seven of the area’s leading hospitals and is one of the largest health systems in Texas.
Opportunities: Volunteers are needed in a variety roles and departments such as Gift Shop, Information Desk, Volunteer Desk, Cardiology Waiting Room, Waiting Rooms, Acute Care Hospital, Emergency Department, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), Newborn Nursery, Rehabilitation Hospital, Children’s Immunization Education, Clerical Support, Patient Representative, Women’s Center, and Campus Buddy.
We Are Blood (The Blood Center of Central Texas)
Mission: The exclusive community blood supplier serving over 40 hospitals and medical facilities in a 10 county area.
Opportunities: Volunteers are needed as canteen hosts, transporting blood components, at blood drives, as office support and conducting community outreach.
The Trail Foundation
Mission: Protect and enhance the Ann and Roy Butler Hike-and-Bike Trail at Lady Bird Lake.
Opportunities: Groups are needed to help maintain the trails and individuals are needed to plant and maintain gardens along the trail and for bi-monthly trail clean up events.
Mobile Loaves and Fishes Community First
Mission: 27-acre master planned community that provides affordable, permanent housing and a supportive community for the disabled, chronically homeless in Central Texas.
Opportunities: Building and maintaining homes, community maintenance, event staff, resident care.
Communities in Schools
Mission: Surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life.
Opportunities: Reading buddies, after-school activities, tutoring, mentoring, organize a supply drive, success coaching, and interactive role-play.
Meal on Wheels & More
Mission: Nourish and enrich the lives of the homebound and other people in need through programs that promote dignity and independent living.
Opportunities: Meal delivery drivers, meal managers, minor home repair services, working with folks with Alzheimer’s on brain-stimulating activities, delivering groceries, assisting with care for client’s pets, and assist clients with grocery shopping.
