Celebrate “Do Something Nice Day!” 20 Small Acts of Kindness that Can Go a Long Way

banner

Every year on October 5th we’re reminded that it doesn’t take a big effort to show kindness to family, friends and strangers. Even the smallest act can make a difference in someone’s day or life. So on this Do Something Nice Day consider one or more of the following:

Strangers

  1. Collect change around the house and donate it to a charity of the family’s choosing
  2. Start your own food drive for a food bank or to make healthy sack lunches for the homeless
  3. Buy the coffee for the person behind you in the drive through/line
  4. Bring a supply of the most needed items to a shelter for women and children, the homeless, or animals
  5. Leave a bigger than normal tip and message of thanks on the bill
  6. Offer those working outside—mail carriers, construction workers, lawn and maintenance workers— something refreshing to drink
  7. Let someone go in front of you in line
  8. Leave sticky notes with inspirational messages in random public places
  9. Be polite on the road – let them merge or go before you
  10. Make treats for firefighters, police or other first-responders and drop it off at their station

Family/Friends

  1. Take someone else’s kids out for a few hours: ice-cream, park, movies, etc.
  2. Do yard work or housekeeping for someone who can’t do it themselves
  3. Make pre-cooked meals for an elderly friend or family member to eat throughout the week
  4. Include a compliment in your next email or text
  5. Reach out to someone you haven’t talked to in awhile
  6. Bring flowers to someone you love
  7. Play a sport with a youth in the family
  8. Send your parents or someone who had an impact in your life an unexpected Thank You either by phone, text, email or card
  9. Pay for a friend or family member’s lunch
  10. Finally, be kind to YOURSELF! We all deserve the kindness of others and ourselves.
