Austin’s First Skyscraper Combines Historic Beauty with Modern Flair

After 88 Years Norwood Tower Continues to Attract Innovative Tenants

Hailed as the most dazzling building in Austin since 1929, Norwood Tower was the city’s first skyscraper and some say resembles a classic fairy-tale castle. The dramatic façade of this elegant Gothic Revival office tower stuns the viewer with its eclectic confection of finials, gargoyles and ornate tracery full of romance, mystique and nostalgia.

Even the lobby literally harkens back to the golden age of the skyscraper with travertine marble throughout and gold leaf medallions adorning the ornate ceiling. Its history is intricately interwoven with Austin’s oldest families, medical and legal professionals, and the business community.

In 1925, municipal securities and bonds broker, Ollie Osborn Norwood (1887-1961), recognized the need for professional space in a city with only two other office buildings. He decided on a Castle in the Sky that would rise 16 stories in a city where only the Capitol and the UT Tower were taller. It remained the tallest high-rise in downtown Austin for almost 40 years!

frozen-music-300x231Purchased in 1997 by the Lyndon B. Johnson family, more than $2 million has been invested to restore the building to Class A status and attract businesses of all types– from financial firms to creative agencies like Proof Advertising. This AdAge’s Small Agency of the Year stripped down an entire floor, exposing concrete pillars and open ceilings, and added unique architectural elements that reflect their corporate culture.

Today’s Norwood Tower offers features and amenities not easily found in Austin’s Central Business District:
