The deepening of the Port of Savannah is expected to have a lasting impact not only on Savannah but on metro Atlanta as well. The deepening, from 42-feet to 47-feet, is expected to be complete in 2019. Savannah is poised to rapidly increase service to an arc of inland markets, from Atlanta to Memphis, to St. Louis, Chicago and the Ohio Valley, and more rail lines and industrial space will be needed to accommodate the growing amount of goods shipped to the port. Savannah currently offers the fastest westward transit times in the South Atlantic region, including overnight service to a five-state area – Alabama, Georgia, Florida, North Carolina and South Carolina.
