What’s the best career advice you have ever been given?
Many years ago, in the early days of graduate school, one of my professors explained that one of the most important pitfalls to avoid is falling into “someone else’s logic” without realizing it or questioning it. She insisted that we evaluate a situation or challenge from a variety of perspectives, including those divergent from our own, and using a number of different lenses so we could truly understand not only the content of other viewpoints, but the context of those viewpoints—the history, circumstances, values and beliefs that inform them. Only then could we see and address the shortcomings of those views.
The discipline of that type of analysis has been my guiding star in how I think about building a business, addressing our clients’ needs, and truly creating a platform for adaptation and innovation.
How do you #PressforProgress?
I have two approaches. One is good counsel from Adrienne Rich, the great essayist, poet: “We must use what we have to invent what we desire.” And the other is to remember the immortal words of Johnny Castle and don’t let anybody “put baby in the corner.”
