Why is diversity important in the workplace?
Diversity is important in the workplace because the world is diverse, and our business is all about the people- from service lines and brokers, to clients, and theirs. Everyone brings a different perspective to the table, which means finding better, more effective, and meaningful ways to solve problems together. Cultivating an environment that celebrates diversity encourages individuals to take pride and ownership in their work, their company, and their lives—and there’s a lot of strength in that.
How do you celebrate Pride?
I write in my time away from work, and a large part of that is devoted to teen fiction with positive and diverse representation- particularly for LGBTQ+. Part of this involves being involved in the writing community, too, by supporting other #ownvoices writers and the good work that they do to help get diverse books out there for our kids. Sometimes, a book is the only thing a teen gets to hold onto, to know they’re not alone… so I can’t think of a better way to celebrate than to keep up the good fight in normalizing diversity in our media, one word at a time.
How did you self-identify as LGBTQ+ at work?
I haven’t actually told anyone, but am a friend and support to those who have. It’s a very personal thing, and I think it’s fine to take your time with it. I love that Cushman & Wakefield has made a safe and protected space so that we have the choice. This isn’t something I’ve ever had the choice in before! No one has asked me invasive questions, put any pressure, or made judgments of any kind. It takes conscious effort to change the status quo, and it means a lot to be a part of a company that is making strides to do just that.
